Re: Can smoking be regarded as a hobby?

This is a debatable topic because smokers will defend their smoking as to consider it as a hobby. I have to agree that smoking can relax the smoker because I was once a smoker myself. However you have to understand that there are outlying health issues and also the expense for buying cigarettes. But...

Re: Adjusting to the weather

My first trip abroad was a work assignment in London for 4 months. I arrived with the temperature at 15 C which was cool but not uncomfortable. After a week I noticed the temperature to be dipping regularly until I felt the cold at 10 C temperature. It was hard to sleep at night when the weather got...

Re: Opening a business in Philippines

A foreigner who is going to open a business in the Philippines would need the help of a resident who can be trusted. There are many traps in the processing of a start up like the needed documents such as business name registration, business permit, tax registration and even the rent of the business ...

Coco jam is our native bread spread

I grew up in the era of peanut butter and coco jam for breakfast. They are the most common bread spread in those days when hot dog and spam were not around yet. Until now the coco jam is persisting in our suburban town. People from the city come to our town to buy coco jam and other native delicacie...

Re: Winter Solstice

This occasion called Winter Solstice is new to me. What we have for December is Christmas but there are other occasions that are not very popular but related to Christmas. There is the feast of Christ the King in the last week of November that is celebrated with a procession. On December 8 is the Im...

Re: Pasalamat Festival

Most of the religious festivities in the Philippines are amusing and interesting. Aside from the prayer for the color of religion there is the parade or procession with music sometimes. When it is a feast day there will be parlor games with sponsors for the prizes. Incidentally yesterday June 24 was...

Re: Where did you meet?

I am not married to a foreigner but I almost did when I was in the US. Someone introduced me to an American Latina who had eyes for me at once. To be frank, I am a shy guy so the movement f romance was very slow. Before something big could happen I realized that I want someone who speaks my language...

Re: Problems in living abroad

Based on the people I know who are residing abroad the first issue is homesickness and later on there would be issue of discrimination even in the workplace. I know of some domestic helpers in the Middle East that have forgotten the feeling of being homesick because they are focused on doing their w...

Re: united arab emirates

I have several friends in Dubai who are inviting me for a vacation. But I don't feel comfortable in an Arab country because of the big differences in our culture and religion. It is scary to think that I might be arrested for violating their laws. My friends say that Dubai is a free place even with ...

Re: Traditions on Foreign Soil

Cultural assimilation is very important if you are living in a different culture. For example, if you are in the Islamic world, you should avoid drinking alcohol. If you are in Nepal, you should avoid asking for beef. You should never offend other's cultures. The big difference in culture is the re...
