I know that it is difficult to be in a country where English speakers are rare. We have experienced that in 1992 during our first trip to Hongkong. We were using hand signals to express what we want especially in the restaurants. But in some stores we were lucky to talk with an attendant who knows little English. But now Hongkong has many English speakers and you wouldn't have a difficult time unlike before.

I'm surprised that Singapore is on this list. I always thought that because it's an Asian country that it would have it's own unique language were most people didn't speak English.

We have been to Singapore many times since 2012 and I'd say there are 3 kinds of people there - the Chinese, the Indians and the native Malaysians. Although there are English speakers there but not many. Perhaps just a little more than in Japan or in Hongkong.

Even when you are not in English-speaking countries, in most cases, English happens to be a language of communication with the natives. For example, ours is not an English-speaking country, however, if you come here, you will have no problem in communication as English is widely used. When I was in college, I wanted to move to English speaking country for studies and hopefully stay there.

I noticed that the Philippines is not included in the list, it's an English-speaking country also, and people there are very knowledgable in English. The food and places here in my country are worth tasting and seeing, so it's a country worth visiting.
